This run is 144 miles and takes approximately 3hours and 50 minutes, not counting the stops and the run home. I have shortened it up because the last part of the run the roads were not very good and this was the ideal place to break and allow for folks to head home early or take the break I have laid out at the end by getting a very good meal on the Cheap at the best of the Common Man restaurants (and it IS cheaper and more comfortable, living room style dinning (or on the deck, weather permitting). The very last stop is for our ladies...And yes you too, PBR lovers, the Tangers outlet in Tilton....all the good stuff you love (nothing for me here but Im not the boss LOL)....Anyway thanks to John, Liz, Frank, Lala And Patty for letting me get lost and ragging on me (Not really they were very patient ) and to Kev getting my butt motivated as I was a bit nervous about doing this (Kev can you also post/forward it for me as Im not sure I have everybody on my list). Hopefully you will all have a good time and the weather will be nice. This will be even better if there is any foliage as it is scenic and great for photos ! The roads are in nice shape some with good miles of fresh pavement in the beginning, 114 is a bit bumpy in spots but it is all good in general with very few exceptions. Ive picked out a couple of Ice cream joints but am afraid they may close being seasonal (still have the Common Man though and the little store across the street which has fun stuff, this is the parking lot for the restaurant as well).Anyway down to basics, we will meet in the center of Contoocook at 9AM and park in the train station parking lot. Across the street you will see Bridget's Cafe. She has good white Mt Coffee and breakfast sandwiches in case you need that bite (Try the Arrmage on a Croissant (egg, tomato, garlic and cheese its very good) there is also a small bathroom and she has been notified of our arrival. Between Bradford and New London in the town of Sutton is a little church with town monument which might be nice for a photo op with all of our cars if folks are up for it and in the center of New London there is a Dunkin Donuts, (I know we have coffee addicts in our group so let me know via FRS if you need to stop and get a cup of Joe for our next stop as it is just a minute up the road). Our first real stop will be Cricenti's Bog, This is a glacier made bog and back in the 1700's folks could take a boat out on it and fish it. Now there is amazing flora here including pitcher plants. If you step off in some places you'll disappear. Yoy can see "greener" patches where the deer have been sucked into the earth. When its wet and you jump up and down on the board walk the ground will jiggle like pudding. Every time I come here I see something new so be sure to bring a camera. No need to change shoes as it is pretty dry now. Our next stop will be the George's Mills Irving Station (Bio/Gas/coffee break) and then up to Enfield. The ride there is scenic as well with windy roads turning into a long straight ride with hills (good shot for car pics while we are moving). Montcalm Monastery will be on the left (where they put on a good Christmas light show if you get the chance) and the upper Shaker village is pleasant to the eye as well as the drive around the shore line Note: Coming into Lebanon stay in the Left lane for 4 West then bear right around the traffic circle. This isnt very hard but just wanted to give a heads up and will do so FRS. Here we can stop at the "Dairy Twirl" for ice cream if it is open (left hand side of the road with plenty of parking). Entering West Lebanon the road is under construction so we will have to go slow for a quarter mile or so and then get into the Left lane as we will be turning on to Rt 5 into White River Junction. There is a Dinner on the left hand side if we need lunch. Go over the bridge stay straight then bear right on to route 5. In Farlee we can stop at the Subway for food and Bio break. There is a soft serve joint there is well (Seasonal)? Taking route 25 out of Orford toward Wentworth has been resurfaced, not great but a hell of a lot better then it was. I think I lost my tooth on that road the first time I went over it. Windy, fun and could hold some nice foliage :o) One half mile on to route 25 on the left hand side is "Shawnee's" store, good for Bio and snakages. Also in Rumney is an information, park and ride, rest stop, on the left hand side of the road with "Port-o-potty's" if needed... Not far from that we will be entering west Plymouth, Plymouth and then to the Common Man. That about sums it up and if you have any questions, Ask Patty!!! ;0) G PS. ![]() Dave and Pam...Thanks for the great cookout at your lovely home! Cris, thanks for the pics, and the nice book! Frank thanks for the corn and the salt! Greg, thanks for the napkin :). Was great to meet new members! Hope to see you again very soon! Thanks everyone else for great laughs, good times and great friends! My icecream sure was dripping, but it was good. Thanks Dave and Pam for the Icecream stop. Dave and Pam, I found Harmony Park cache. Check it out with the kids. I parked across the street from the little beach area. See the Harmony Park sign on the roof over the picnic tables. from the picnic tables, walk all the way to the end near the chain link fence at the waters edge right near the house or garage and boat docked there. Look up the little hillside toward the road. Look under the bush branches but look up about chest high. Ammo Box, full of goodies the kids will enjoy... Also, found Leavy Park Cache. Walked all of the trails and did some bushwaking cuz I was in the wrong area. Got back on the right trail around back side and found the cache. Left a travel coin sand dollar...Now the icon for that shows up on the site...cool...The lookout up there netted me some great photos of Alton Bay. |
